Back in 1989, two Baltimore social workers recognized the urgent need for non-medical home care and Visiting Angels was born. Their home care, custodial agency became so successful, it was franchised nationally. There are now over 80 franchise agencies throughout the country.

Wayne Boylan, RN, bought a Visiting Angels franchise in Broward County two years ago and takes great satisfaction in offering services that enable people to continue enjoying the independence of daily routines and the familiar surroundings of home. Licensed by the State of Florida to provide non-medical home care, the initial client contact is made by Boylan who goes to the client’s home for a personal meeting and assessment of needs.

“Every case is unique so our service is instantly personalized to address the specific needs of each client,” he explains. “My first meeting with the client and family members determines the amount and kind of care required. We offer up to 24 hour care with assistance in hygiene, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, shopping and joyful companionship.”

“We are an ideal solution for overtired family caregivers,” he smiles and continues. “Temporary or long-term help is available for weekends, holidays, night and day, live in or live out.”

Next Boylan carefully matches a caregiver with the necessary experience and personality best suited to the needs and care of the recipient. The client gets to meet and approve the caregiver selected. Once the care begins, Boylan stays in contact with the client in person or by phone, visits weekly or more often when necessary. If, in the course of care, there are problems or a personality conflict, he immediately handles the situation or introduces a new caregiver.

One client, Lynda Weiser, gives Boylan raves. “We’re a busy household with my husband, children, pets and an aged mother with Alzheimer’s disease,” she explains. “We’ve had Visiting Angles for almost a year and they have been wonderful. Each one brought creativity and intelligence into our home and became part of the family.”

“Without this kind of help, we would be forced to put Mother into a nursing home. With this help, she stays in a familiar environment, surrounded by a loving family. I’ve been able to trust these caregivers and felt safe in leaving them alone in our home. Nothing has ever been missing.”

Flushing with pleasure at the praise, Boylan says, “Of course all employees are bonded and insured through Visiting Angels. I also do a criminal background check, but I put most credence on what previous employers say about my potential employees. I check at least three former employers on every caregiver’s reference list.”

The caregivers are all either home health aids who have passed the 40-hour course taught at vocational schools or they are certified nurse assistants who have passed the course and the state test for certification.

Asked how he finds his caregivers and clients he says, “At first I had to advertise for them, but now, thanks to word of mouth, they often find me. I am established and have built confidence and trusting relationships with both caregivers and clients. Through personal references, I get a regular flow of calls from caregivers and clients.”

On Mother’s Day, Boylan delivered fresh flowers to his clients and his caregivers. “They were all very touched and appreciative,” he says.

“He does go that extra mile,” Linda Weiser says. “Recently, when mother’s dog died, Wayne suggested we get a stuffed dog that looked like her schnauzer so she could caress it. He just called me to say he saw the perfect dog in a catalog and ordered it for me. I am so grateful to him for his very personal service.”

Visiting Angels caregivers are available by the hour or the live-in, 24-hour per day rate. Private pay and insurance accepted.
